Alumnus Phil Hewitt publishes book on recovery after trauma

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

In February 2016, marathon runner and journalist Phil Hewitt was attacked in Cape Town. Deeply traumatised by the attack, he turned to running - and found a rich source of healing and recovery. He tells his story in his new book, alongside the stories of 34 other people who have used running similarly in the wake of war, terrorism, assault, addiction, bereavement, depression and serious illness. He offers it as a book not so much about running, but much more about hope and survival.

The motif of a stele or book in which a legendary or pre-historian figure inscribes some form of human knowledge to preserve the world’s ancient wisdom and to withstand future world destructions by water or fire is a common topos both in Asia and in Europe. The recurrence of this topos in a variety of cultural contexts calls us to consider: why is the topos of losing and finding texts/ knowledge so wide-spread? This topos also invites a consideration of its purpose: it is a tool of legitimation? A way to reconfigure (foreign?) ideas? A quest for authority? This paper will look at some examples of lost and found knowledge, try to analyse their persistence and remark on some of their lingering effects.

There will be a table (with wine!) in hall reserved for dinner this Tuesday, 5 March for Wolfies that are living off-site. A reminder that dinner is served 18:30-19:30 and there will be Welfare cake afterwards in the UCR. We hope that this will be a great way to reconnect with the college and maybe bump into some neighbours you never knew you had! Note: Other Wolfies are welcome to join as well! But please make an effort to meet someone new.
