Do you use machine learning in your research? If you have a success story, cautionary tale or something compelling to say — here’s a chance to present and share with the Wolfson community! The Cross-disciplinary Applications of Machine Learning (XML) workshop brings together members of the Wolfson community who apply machine learning techniques in their research, be it in the sciences, humanities or other disciplines. It will be a great opportunity to hear about the impact of machine learning in various disciplines, and to network and exchange ideas. Each talk should be about 15 minutes in length, and should be accessible to a general audience. The workshop is scheduled for May 31, 2019 (subject to change). Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and fellows are all welcome to present. If you are interested in presenting at the workshop, please email either: stephen.suryasentana@eng.ox.ac.uk or yaling.hsiao@psy.ox.ac.uk by the end of 30 April 2019.

A talk: Hans and Willy Schenk: refugees from Prague in war-time Britain. A personal reflection, by Christopher Schenk. Christopher Schenk was a graduate student at Wolfson from 1972 to 1975, when he completed his B.Litt. thesis on the history of imaginary numbers, supervised by Robin Gandy. His uncle, H.G. Schenk, was a historian, and one of the founding (Iffley) Fellows of Wolfson College. H.G. Schenk published two books: The Aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars and The Mind of the European Romantics. Christopher’s father, Willy (Wilhelm), was also a historian, who taught at the Universities of Manchester and Exeter. Willy was the author of The Concern for Social Justice in the Puritan Revolution and Reginald Pole, Cardinal of England. This talk is arranged as part of the Old Wolves series but is open to all - no charge - no booking needed.

Alumni Reunion in Tokyo

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

The event was well attended, with alumni and friends of Wolfson coming from all over the world for the reunion and to participate in the Meeting Minds weekend.

Sir Tim commented on the evening, "I was amazed at the range of Wolfson alumni active in Japan, from social anthropologists to businesspeople, civil society activists to prefectural Governors... we were so lucky that the cherry blossom was just out, and the moon was full, so it was a Wolfson Hanami night".

Sir Tim joined Dr David Passarelli, UNU Executive Officer, to discuss the impact of Brexit on the UK's global soft power and the reputation of its universities.

On the event, Sir Tim commented, “It was a real pleasure to meet over 150 young Japanese and international students at the UN University in Tokyo, and have a lively discussion about what real soft power is”.

Passarelli holds a doctorate in International Development from the University of Oxford and has worked with the UNU since 2008.

The Korrigan Consort is thrilled to present a spring double-bill, featuring Joanna Ward’s Hunger and Antonio Vivaldi’s Judith Triumphs.

Two tales, two women, two troubled souls. One, an artist struggling to form her identity as a creative, a woman, and a mother. One, a noblewoman with the weight of a nation on her shoulders, rebelling against the expectation of women to sacrifice. Both struggle under the thumb of patriarchs and patriarchy, with stories reaching across time.

Premiered in ENO’s Lilian Baylis House in 2017, with a successful recent performance at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ward’s opera brings new light to a classic Kafka story. Set alongside Vivaldi’s convent work telling the Biblical story of a warrior queen, this production promises a thought-provoking look at the way Western societies have treated strong women, and challenges the positivist narrative of 21st century feminism.
