As Brexit approaches, we look at the question of who are The British, and why do they behave as they do? Wolfson brings together an anthropologist and a linguist to talk about British behaviours and language use; a diplomat who used to try to represent the British overseas; and an Oxford academic and Oxford graduate student who have had to navigate the cultural complexities of being non-British in Oxford. In 2009, Elinor Olstrom became – and remains – the only woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics, awarded for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons. Ten years on, we revisit her groundbreaking book Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action. The governance of natural resources used by many individuals in common is an issue of increasing concern to policy analysts, yet solutions remain elusive. Offering a critique of the foundations of policy analysis as applied to natural resources, Dr Ostrom explores different ways – both successful and unsuccessful – of governing the commons. She seeks solutions to the “Tragedy of the Commons”, analysing both the prisoners’ dilemma and innovative use of game theory to provide alternatives to narrow models of rational choice.

Recent years have seen an increasing interest in the role of courts, judges and the legal profession more widely in the social sciences. The traditional focus on judicial behaviour in the US has given way to a greater geographical, methodological and theoretical diversity of research on these questions. The growth of the research field has been spurred by an increase in politically salient and contested court decisions even in countries with a traditionally apolitical judiciary, such as the UK. The first OxonCourts Judicial Studies Graduate Colloquium at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, aims to give graduate students working on this field the opportunity to share and discuss their research, in particular work in its early stages, across disciplines.

The Wolfson Green Team will be hosting a MOVIE NIGHT on Tuesday 12 Feb at 8.15pm at the ECR, showing "Tomorrow" (2015), a documentary about inspiring initiatives to fight climate change all around the world. The idea of the communal screening is also to raise awareness about the carbon footprint of the internet, especially streaming video content. While it's difficult to tell exactly how big the emissions are from internet usage, it is estimated that they exceed that of air travel. More info here.

For one evening, instead of streaming something on Youtube or Netflix, why not come dispel 5th week blues with us at the new tv room (temporary ECR)? For directions, please ask at lodge.
