The Punjab Research Group has been hosting conferences at least twice a year since 1984 and was established as an inclusive and all-embracing forum to provide a platform for discussion and debate on issues pertaining to East and West Punjab as well as the Punjabi diaspora. During the past 35 years, the PRG has provided space for academics to interact with each other regardless of territorial or disciplinary boundaries. This is especially important given the often-strained relationship between India and Pakistan, which has prevented discussion and dialogue between scholars of East and West Punjab. Our second conference for 2019 will be held as a one-day event on 26th October (Saturday) at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. Best Presenter Award will be presented to a doctoral student whose presentation is judged to be the best from amongst all the full time doctoral student presentations.

Futures Thinking is a TORCH research network that uses Humanities methodologies to think through future-oriented technologies and concerns. This conference seeks to explore the future of reading and narrative in relation to how questions of inequality, bias in programming and developing technologies are changing the way that human beings create and interact with narrative and the self. We are interested in how reading and technology can be understood as acts of futurity, bringing the future into the user/reader’s present, and in doing so opening up some futures while closing off others. From a fundamentally interdisciplinary network, this conference brings together computer scientists and narrative theorists, philosophers and mathematicians, artists and social scientists, so as to collapse the perceived boundaries in disciplinary interests.

There is no critical consensus regarding the term autofiction. Some see it as describing any novel with autobiographical elements, others apply more restrictive definitions. This two-day conference seeks to bring together different theoretical approaches to autofiction, to explore the validity of the concept and to think about how different definitions and traditions influence our reading of works at the intersection of fiction and autobiography. The discussion thus far has been taking place mainly in Francophone, German, Scandinavian, and Anglophone theory and with reference to case studies from these contexts. In this conference we intend to consider these traditions in comparison and crucially to broaden the discussion to other languages and geo-political areas. By comparing diverse theoretical approaches and drawing on case studies from across Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America, we will explore how autofictional texts negotiate and challenge concepts of gender, race, and cultural and national identity.

How can life-stories from the Global South enhance our understanding of southern histories, cultures, and lives? In this workshop we will explore the ethical challenges researchers have encountered in writing Southern lives, as well as the question of how to write a biography in a postcolonial or decolonial context. We will think through how various theories of the self, of storytelling, and ways of understanding history can be brought to bear on these important questions, to provoke a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of working with individual lives as a way to study the Global South. Speakers include, Professor Marcio Goldman of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Professor Supriya Chaudhuri of Jadavpur University, India; Dr Ramon Sarro, Dr Nayanika Mathur and Professor Elleke Boehmer.

This conference explores scientific disciplines or knowledge-systems that have had a significant impact on premodern Asian culture and thought, namely grammar, mathematics & astronomy, music and medicine. Each of these traditions will form the scope of an individual panel and be chaired by a specialist in the field; an additional panel will be held on "technology" in premodern Asia.
