The large Roman farm or villa rustica at Matrice, (Molise), lies about 120 km northeast of Naples in the Apennine Mountains of Italy. Discovered during the Biferno Valley Survey in the 1970s and excavated between 1980 and 1986, work on publication was suspended following the untimely death in 1999 of the Director (Dr John Lloyd, Oxford Institute Archaeology/Wolfson College). But Matrice's importance as the only local systematically excavated Roman rural site remains. In 2017 new partnership with the British School at Rome (BSR) facilitated an extensive geophysical survey. Excavations were carried out in 2018 and study of finds (funded by AWRC) indicated the focus for final excavations this year.

Members of the AWRC are welcome to join the AWRC lunch table in Hall from 12.30.
