“Now every year about 2% of the spirit is actually lost, it just disappears and evaporates into thin air. Gone forever. It’s what we call…

The Angels’ Share

🥃Narrowly escaping a prison sentence, Robbie (Paul Brannigan), a former rogue and now a young father, discovered a new pathway to release himself and his family from the swamp of crimes and feuds. After a trip to a whisky distillery with his community payback group and his supervisor, Harry (John Henshaw), a plan surrounding a cask of priceless whisky, the Mat Mill, was formulated in his head.

🥃Based in Glasgow, Scotland, this 2012 comedy film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. The movie’s director, Ken Loach, deftly pours comedy into reality, brewing a moving image that captures the audience with its theme of communal redemption and personal growth.

Screening of (unreleased) documentary film on memories of partition in South Asia 'The Bus that Didn’t stop'.

Film synposis: In the middle of the pandemic lockdown in Karachi, Corinne Jaber is rehearsing her play on the Partition of India with a small group of Pakistani actors. The play is a series of testimonies from Partition survivors based on a book by Pakistani researcher Anam Zakaria. Since a performance is unlikely to take place due to the pandemic, Jaber decides to film the creative journey. As the cast delve deeper into the characters they are portraying, they discover connections to themselves. They start to realize the extent to which Partition is shaping their lives up to this very day and begin to see their own country, their own identities in a new light. Confined to the walls of the former Hindu temple the cast are filming in, Jaber begins to reflect on her own journey and tries to understand why she is drawn to countries that have nothing to do with her. As she recalls her trip to Wagah border, the border crossing separating India and Pakistan. Corinne is reminded of her mother whose life has been shaped by a Partition on the other side of the world, that of East and West Germany.

The lockdown is intensifying and even filming secretly is no more possible. The cast and crew wrap up and hope for better times when theatres will open again.

Director bio: Corinne Jaber is of Syrian/German heritage and was born in Munich and raised in Canada and Germany. She is an award-winning actress as well as a writer/director. She has been part of many international theatre productions such as - to name but a few - Peter Brook’s The Mahabharata, A Dybbuk for 2, by and with the late Bruce Myers, Irina Brook's Beast on the Moon (for which she obtained a “Molière”, the best actress award in France) and more recently Oh my sweet Land (which premiered in its English version at the Young Vic in London) a monologue which she conceived and co-authored together with Amir Nizar Zuabi as well as acted in. For many years she has worked with Afghan actors in Kabul on Shakespeare. Their work culminated in a production of Comedy of Errors at the “Globe to Globe Festival” for the Globe Theatre in London (“Guardian” recommendation as one of the 12 best Shakespeare productions to stream during lockdown). She is currently in the process of post-production of The Bus That Didn’t Stop, her first feature documentary. As well as in pre- production of her most recent play Munich Medea: Happy Family which will premiere in New York in February 2024.
