Every term, Wolfson College's President, Sir Tim Hitchens, hosts a Seminar in which three members of the College of different academic levels present on a general theme from the point of view of their own research. The Seminar, orginally created by former president Dame Hermione Lee, has been a staple of the Wolfson academic life for several years.

The theme for Trinity Term 2023 is "Less Bias". President Sir Tim Hitchens will host the President's Seminar in the Haldane Room in Wolfson College on Monday the 15th of May 2023 at 18:00 (GMT). Everyone is welcome to join.

Speakers:

Amaia Salazar Rodriguez: "Exploring the Impact of Artistic Bias"

Title: Divine Kinship at the Assyrian Royal Court

Between the ninth and seventh centuries BC, the Neo-Assyrian Empire came to encompass much of the area referred to today as the Middle East. Bearing witness to this expansion, the excavated material remains – palace reliefs, monumental sculptures, and tiny seals – reveal a complex and ever-evolving iconography of Assyrian rulership. While studies of the underpinning ideology have traditionally focused on the subject of kingship, this presentation situates the king within a broader system of interconnected figures, including the queen as well as the crown prince, proposing that their public personas were all implicated in the overarching expression of sanctified, royal authority.

The Ancient World Research Cluster (AWRC) is pleased to announce an upcoming talk, to be given by one of its members Courtney Nimura. Courtney will present her research on Bronze Age archaeology and visual culture in Scandinavia. The event will be catered with tea, coffee, and cakes, and all are welcome. As with all AWRC lunchtime talks, members of the cluster are invited to lunch, which the AWRC has reserved in Hall from 12.30 to 13.15

Courtney tells us that Scandinavian rock art represents the largest body of pictorial evidence from prehistoric Europe. In the Bronze Age of South Scandinavia (c. 1700–500 BC), the rock art is characterised by depictions of watercraft. The majority are close to the coast, so less attention has been paid to similar drawings associated with inland water. In this talk, I introduce the rock art of the region, present the results of fieldwork around two lakes in Sweden, and consider the relationship of inland images to the better-known images on the coast. I will also explore the practicalities of navigating between the sea and the interior, using rock art as a proxy for understanding potential 'maritime places' in inland environments, and put forth different ideas about the function of these sites within wider Bronze Age networks.

George Monbiot is back, and this time it's personal.

If we learned anything from George's last talk at Wolfson, it's that climate change is hard to talk about. This is your chance to discuss dicey topics in a private space with one of the world's leading climate activists.

This fireside chat will be hosted under Chatham House Rule to help create a trusted environment where we can talk through complex problems in confidence. You're free to share and receive information with the added security that your identity remains private outside of that room. There will be no live stream or recording of any kind, including photographs.

  • Spaces are limited to 25
  • One ticket per person
  • Wolfson students only
  • You must book using your Wolfson address
  • Booking is mandatory
  • Tickets  are free to book and will be checked at the door. If you don't attend and check in, you will be charged £15 to your Battels account. This is to ensure attendance as places are limited.

PS. Spaces are very limited and no-shows are at the expense of someone who would have loved to attend. Please keep this in mind and let us know at least two days before the event if you can't come.
