Wolfson Fellows Recognised for Pioneering Research

Dr Mootaz Salman has received a grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to study mechanisms involved in brain waste clearance using organ-on-chip technology. The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Pioneer Awards enable researchers like Dr Salman to explore new ideas that challenge existing ways of thinking.

Dr Salman has received £196,648 in funding to continue his ground-breaking research into understanding how the brain clears waste product. Dr Salman is hopeful that further research into this issue could revolutionise the way we understand neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Professor Lucie Cluver was recently nominated for a Fellowship at the Academy for Social Sciences. This honour is a significant indicator of peer esteem and is reflective of the huge contribution that Professor Cluver has made to the field. Professor Cluver’s evidence-based research underpins parenting resources which have provided support for families during times of crisis around the world. She has dedicated much of her career to research that aims to improve the health and education of AIDS-affected children in South Africa. Professor Cluver recently appeared on the Academy of Social Sciences’ podcast discussing her work with Will Hutton.

“This honour is testament to her ground-breaking work in understanding and addressing the challenges faced by young children and adolescents,” said Professor Timothy Power, head of Oxford’s Social Science Division, adding that Professor Cluver’s work “showcases the social sciences’ vital contribution to shaping societal well-being.”
