In Memoriam

Sir Anthony was one of the pre-eminent British sculptors of his generation and specialised in large abstract structures that have been exhibited worldwide, some of which can be seen in this BBC picture gallery.

Sir Anthony's connection to Wolfson goes back to the late 1980s, during Sir Raymond Hoffenberg's presidency, when he gifted a piece of sculpture 'Double Half' to the College.

Born in 1924 in New Malden, he worked as assistant to Henry Moore after studying sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He first came to public attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, where he exhibited large abstract sculptures brightly painted and standing directly on the ground so that they engage the spectator on a one-to-one basis. This was a radical departure from the way sculpture had hitherto been seen and paved the way for future developments in three-dimensional art.

Sir Anthony most recently spoke at Wolfson College in 2011. He talked with Tim Marlow, Director of White Cube Gallery, on his fifty-year long career. A full report and audio recording of the evening are available through this Wolfson news article.
