To mark the centenary of the Armistice, we present Stanley Kubrick’s digitally restored masterpiece Paths of Glory. Widely considered to be both his finest work and the best film about the First World War ever made, the film explores the morality of conflict as French Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is forced to defend three fellow soldiers faced with execution for cowardice and dereliction of duty. Paths of Glory transcends its genre by offering not only a scathing portrayal of the corrosive effects of war and unfettered authority, but, in its trademark closing sequence, a devastatingly poignant comment on the nature of the human condition. Cecile Fabre, Professor of of Political Philosophy at Oxford, will give an introductory talk to accompany the screening. Praise for Paths of Glory "A visual masterpiece" ***** Time Out "Stanley Kubrick's best film" ***** The Guardian "A work of genius" Film4
