Wolfson Alumni life stories: Garlen Lo

"With the new term about to begin, the chatter and footsteps of excitement must now be filling the corridors and common rooms of Wolfson once again. How sad I am to no longer be surrounded by this special environment that I called home these last two years.

Oxford has been life changing. As much as I have learnt studying my masters in social anthropology, I have equally learnt from being a Wolfsonian. All colleges have clubs and societies, bops, balls, seminars, welfare tea and cakes, etc, but there is something different about Wolfson's DNA that permeates into its students and staff, which binds us like no other College I have come across.

Maybe it's because of our distance, consequently providing us with Oxford's first and only mobile common room in the form of our minibus. Maybe it's because of our harbour on the Cherwell; the sight of friends punting and the sound of fowl quacking relieving Wolfsonians of our mid-week essay stress. Or maybe it's because of Isaiah Berlin and the spirit of community that he fostered in the founding of this college.

From all the staff I knew, and the many people further behind the scenes whose names I don't know but who I always saw, I'm aware there is much work that goes into running the day-to-day demands of an Oxford college; all of which, of course, is to provide the best environment for its students to excel and enjoy.

Every Wolfson memory is one that I am already holding dear, and I only left this summer."
