Happy International Mother Language Day

Wolfson College has put together a video featuring students talking in their own mother language. From Bengali to Hungarian, British Sign Language to Dutch, ten different languages are highlighted in this video. Wolfson College's graduate students represent over seventy countries, making it one of the most internationally diverse colleges in Oxford. 

International Mother Language Day has been observed to promote peace and multilingualism around the world and to protect all mother languages. It was established to recognize the 1952 Bengali Language Movement in former East Bengal advocating the acknowledgement of Bengali as an official language. The day was proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999. In its resolution, the United Nations General Assembly called on its member states to "promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by people of the world".

During the AMREF Coffee and cake on Sunday 24 February, there will be baked goods and sweets from all over the world. Read more
