Paper published by Wolfson JRF calls for more Global Sociology in the age of AI

A new paper by Wolfson JRF Dr Fanqi Zeng argues that sociology must become more globally inclusive if it is to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.

While supporting the principles of integrating theory and empirical research, adopting open science practices, and engaging carefully with wider societal debates, Dr Zeng argues that these approaches are largely framed from the perspective of European and North American sociology. His paper highlights the need for greater collaboration with researchers in the Global South, where many important social issues remain under-researched despite their global significance.

The paper also explores how advances in AI can help researchers devote more time to theory building, contextual interpretation, and understanding the mechanisms behind social change, while reducing the burden of routine analytical tasks.

Dr Zeng’s research bridges AI and the social sciences, using computational methods and large-scale data to better understand complex social and natural systems. His current work focuses on the transformative impact of AI on society and human behaviour.
