Wolfson GBF awarded major Research Grant

Rick Schulting, Wolfson Governing Body Fellow and Professor of Scientific and Prehistoric Archaeology has been awarded a European Research Council Advanced Grant, as part of one of the most competitive research funding schemes in Europe.

Professor Schulting’s research focuses on the Neolithic and Bronze Age, particularly ancient diet, mobility and isotopic analysis. His new project, Stocking the Past, funded by this grant, will use innovative biomolecular techniques to investigate the foods consumed in Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain and Ireland. The project aims to provide new evidence on the balance between cereal cultivation and animal products such as meat and dairy, helping to address longstanding debates about the development of early farming economies.

“The ERC award will allow us to pursue a challenging research problem with a level of focus and support that would otherwise be impossible to achieve,” said Professor Schulting. “I am especially pleased to be able to support promising early career researchers through the project.”

Professor Schulting is one of 14 Oxford academics to receive the ERC Advance Grant this year. In this funding round, a record of 3,329 proposals were submitted, with only 9.6% selected for funding. For the full press release, please click here.
