False Memories and the Malleable Engram: Insights from Natural and Artificial Recall

Memory is not a static record of the past but a dynamic process of reconstruction. Advances in neuroscience now allow us to trace and even manipulate the neural ensembles that encode specific experiences—revealing how easily memories can be reshaped. I will discuss how false memories arise naturally through overlapping neural representations and how experimental techniques, such as optogenetic reactivation, have demonstrated causal links between memory circuits and behaviour. These findings shed light on the adaptive and sometimes deceptive nature of memory and its role in learning and identity.
