Biography

Matthew C Levy is a physicist and AI entrepreneur who served as a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College from 2015 to 2020. He was the first American physicist to be awarded the Newton International Fellowship by the Royal Society, during which he published 11 peer-reviewed manuscripts, filed 2 patents, presented 13 invited talks, and served on the Governing Body of Wolfson College. Dr. Levy represented the Royal Society as “Voice of the Future” in the UK Parliament and was principal organiser of an international workshop on science, innovation, and policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy from Rice University, where he received the William F.

Marlar Scholar award for the best dissertation in space science, and an M.A. from the University of Oxford. In 2024, Dr. Levy was elected Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College.

Prior to his time at Oxford, Dr. Levy was a Lawrence Scholar at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he contributed to research that led to the successful ignition of self-sustaining fusion plasma at the National Ignition Facility in December 2022. His fusion science research resulted in publications in Nature Physics and Nature Communications. Following the Newton International Fellowship, he founded Noble.AI in San Francisco, raising tens of millions of dollars from investors including Microsoft Ventures and Stanford University to build AI tools that accelerate scientific research and development. In 2022, he founded the Baruch Spinoza Scholarship at Oxford in honour of Sir Isaiah Berlin, the founder of Wolfson. In 2023, he founded AE Blue, a fund supporting the fusion and science and technology communities, which has made 7 investments including 5 in fusion energy. He remains deeply grateful to Wolfson College and the Oxford community for their enduring support. His work continues to be guided by a belief that science and entrepreneurship, together, can help solve the world’s most pressing challenges.
