Biography
I specialize in the field of late medieval and early modern numismatics of Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular interest in sigillography, heraldry, and the study of minor art.
Most of my articles discuss Moldovan coins in terms of their typology, chronology, and distribution ranging from state and private collections in the Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Poland to finds in Ukraine and Crimea. This can easily be accounted for by the fact that both of my doctoral theses are focused on this research field. Furthermore, I have collaborated with numerous archaeologists on the publication of coin finds from archaeological research at medieval sites in the aforementioned countries.
I have also ‘gleaned’ information on several exceptional monetary hoards from the 14th to 16th centuries and made this information available to scholars. Among them is a coin hoard from Țuțora (Republic of Moldova) of Balkan origin, which includes Italian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Wallachian, Moldovan, and Genoese coins of Licostomo (!) dating to the late 14th century.
On the other hand, I also try to diversify my research area, which resulted in several publications on Moldovan ornaments and clothing accessories from the 14th to 16th centuries, particularly on elements of oriental origin (lotus flowers, Arabian flowers).
Recently, I have begun to study the coinage of the Trebizond Empire, a fascinating subject full of mystery and controversy, which I hope will culminate in the publication of a two-volume work.
