Biography

How do cells build biological machines? – Cells are expert organisers, manufacturers, transporters and recyclers of biomolecular content. Broadly, my research aims to understand how cells execute these important tasks.

In my lab at the Dunn School of Pathology, we are interested in understanding the manufacturing process of macromolecular machines – specifically the biosynthesis of motor proteins called dynein’s that power the whip-like motion of cilia/flagella – cellular protrusions that play critical roles in human health.

Genetic defects in dynein folding and assembly underlie a range of human pathologies including infertility, making them a clinically important class of biological motor proteins. We integrate cell biology, biochemistry and structural methods to mechanistically understand the folding and assembly of dyneins in health and disease.
