Wolfson Honorary Fellow Alan Berman dies

It is with great sadness that the College has been informed of the death of Alan Berman, who passed away peacefully at home on 17th September at the age of 76.

An Honorary Fellow of the College since 2016, Alan was the design leader on the Leonard Wolfson Auditorium, the new Academic Wing and new residential blocks at Wolfson College. His extensive knowledge of architectural history earned the respect of planning authorities, the 20th Century Society and English Heritage. He wrote for architectural journals and published several books on design and architecture, most notably Jim Stirling and the Red Trilogy: Three Radical Buildings (2010).

He continued to advise the College on architectural issues, give lectures, and until the very end of his life was an important member of the design team for our new Garden Building. He had deep respect for the ideals of Isaiah Berlin for a democratic College, and the architects who designed the original buildings, Powell and Moya. He loved the College and the community he had come to call his own.

Alan is survived by his wife, Alison, and daughters, Philippa and Zoë, to whom any messages of condolence may be sent by email: zoe@studioberman.com
