Governing Body honours departing Fellows

Last week Wolfson’s Governing Body held a Formal Dinner to mark the departure of three of its Fellows, Professors Erica Charters, Jay Lewis, and Christina Redfield. The evening provided the opportunity to acknowledge and thank each of the Fellows for their various contributions to the Wolfson community. Our thanks also to the Catering team whose work in laying and dressing Hall was hugely appreciated by all.

Erica Charters, Professor of the Global History of Medicine – and here at Wolfson, the Fellow for Archives and the Library – has been a valued member of Governing Body as well as a fantastic support to the work of our librarian and archivist. Erica is moving to the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) where both she and her husband have new posts; we wish her the very best.

Jay Lewis arrived in Oxford in June 1994, having finished his term in the University of Hawaii. Jay and his wife Wendy have lived in College for many years, and he has sat on many College Committees, including a stint as Secretary to Governing Body. We are hugely grateful to him for all he has contributed to College life, and wish him the best as he also moves to the US.

Finally, Christina Redfield, who left the Governing Body at the end of December and is now, already, an Emerita Fellow. Christina came to Oxford as a Graduate Student in 1980, and was elected as a Governing Body Fellow in January 1995, a position she then held for 31 years. She has been Deputy Dean of Degrees, Secretary to Governing Body, Vicegerent, Acting President, as well as the Senior Member of the Rowing Club, College representative on the Wiener Anspach postdoc programme, and enthusiastic fundraiser for AMREF. She will be greatly missed as a Governing Body Fellow.
