Former Wolfson Visiting Scholar marks a century of quantum mechanics with inclusion in Times Literary Supplement
We were delighted to hear that Rakhat-Bi Abdyssagin (Visiting Scholar, 2023) has seen his book Quantum Mechanics and Avant-Garde Music: Shadows of the Void included in a recent edition of the Times Literary Supplement.
In his book, Rakhat-Bi, a composer, concert pianist and music theorist, summarises, and draws parallels between, breakthroughs in physics and the seismic changes in music that occurred in the early twentieth century. For example, he describes the impact of Niels Bohr’s pioneering orbital model of the atom and notes that the same year saw the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s seminal ballet score The Rite of Spring. Abdyssagin also details his discussions about links between quantum physics and music with leading scientists – such as the Nobel laureate Brian Josephson.
Bridging the worlds of science and art, Quantum Mechanics and Avant-Garde Music uncovers intriguing parallels between quantum physics and contemporary music, forming a bridge for scientists, musicians, and curious minds in general.
