We invite you to the second Wolfson Quantum Foundations Discussion of the academic year. Bringing together intellectuals from a variety of backgrounds, the Quantum Foundations are an opportunity to ask really big questions about the universe in a fun, relaxed, and interdisciplinary atmosphere.
Tony Short will be leading a discussion about “Parallel worlds and probability”. Pizza, beer and alternatives will be provided. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/bNRbZtfwsHFbPN2B8!
Abstract: Quantum theory underpins almost all of modern physics, and has been extensively studied for almost a century, yet its implications for the nature of reality remain controversial. One possibility is that reality is composed of a single deterministically evolving quantum state, containing within it many parallel worlds (in which equally real, yet different, copies of you go about their lives). I will briefly explain this viewpoint, discuss the meaning of ‘worlds’, and consider how to understand the probabilistic predictions of quantum theory from this perspective.
