The Wolfson Feminist Society is proud to present a panel discussion on Unmasking the Gender Norms: Marriage, Drama and Politics in East Asia.
The discussion features Dr. Chigusa Yamaura, lecturer at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. Her book on Marriage and Marriageability draws findings from her research on cross-border matchmaking practices in Northeast China and Japan.
Jessie Lau, freelance journalist and creative writer from Hongkong, has extensively written on the challenges faced by feminist activists and gender minorities in China.
Zhaoyi Yan, a soprano, studies cross-gender performances in Chinese Opera for her DPhil in ethnomusicology.
Drawing from the diverse contexts of study of our panelists, the discussion seeks to analyse the construction and subversion of gender norms in East Asia. The discussion would also involve a reflection on their experiences researching these intricate social dynamics.
Do join the discussion on Wednesday, 25th June 2025, 5pm onwards in the Games Room in Wolfson College.
