The talk describes the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire project (https://chre.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/) and explores what can be done with the substantial amount of data generated – some 18,300 hoards comprising over seven million coins. By way of example, the hoard evidence is brought to bear on the crisis of the Roman Empire in the third century AD. The nature of the crisis is complex and debated, and some elements of it may be better described as transformation. Nevertheless, the evidence for invasion from outside the Empire is stark, including in Italy itself.
Members of the Cluster are invited to the reserved AWRC lunch table in Hall starting at 12.30 to meet Chris. Chris’ talk in the Levett Room at 1:15 will be catered with cake and tea/coffee (all welcome).
