This cart, no longer surviving, is believed to be an example of a West Country hay cart, probably
originating in Devon or Somerset.
The cart was acquired by the author from a dealer, in an advanced state of dilapidation, in 1980.
It survived till early 1996, as a focal point in the author‘s garden.
Apologies for the poor picture quality.
The nearside wheel is from a heavier cart; the remains of one of the correct (much finer) wheels can be seen in the background. An inscription on the axle bore the maker's mark of ‘Samson, .....?..... and Samson'.
