Bano, Masooda (2012) The Rational Believer: Choices and Decisions in the Madrasas of Pakistan, Cornell University Press

This text presents rich empirical data on factors shaping the appeal of religious education, Islamic feminism, and jihad. However, the book also hopes to make a theoretical contribution. It is one of the first attempts to systemically apply New Institutional Economics (NIE) framework to study of religious behavior. For those interested in applying NIE framework (especially Douglass North’s theoretical propositions) to study of informal institutions, this book will hopefully prove an engaging read.
