Nicola Smart

BHF Ian Fleming Research Fellow, Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Development and Regeneration
Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics

College position:

Dr Nicola Smart’s research seeks to develop novel cardiac regenerative strategies, based on knowledge of the processes involved in development of the embryonic heart and coronary vasculature. Specifically, her work has revealed the potential to reactivate dormant adult cardiac progenitors for repair of the injured heart.
Following postdoctoral research at King’s College London and UCL-Institute of Child Health, Nicola was awarded Intermediate and Senior British Heart Foundation (BHF) Research Fellowships and joined the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG), Oxford, in June 2012. Nicola’s Fellowship is funded by the Fleming family, who support the BHF in memory of the James Bond creator, Ian Fleming.
