Naoya Iwata

British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Faculty of Philosophy

College position:

I am currently a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Philosophy in the University of Oxford. Previously, I was an Overseas (Postdoctoral) Research Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) at the Faculty of Classics in the University of Cambridge and Non-Stipendiary Research Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge (2016-2018). Before that, in 2015, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Philosophy in the University of Oxford for Prof. Anna Marmodoro's ERC-funded research project ‘Power Structuralism in Ancient Ontologies'. I obtained my PhD in July 2015 from Cambridge, where I was supervised by Prof. David Sedley.

My research interest is in ancient philosophy, especially Plato and Aristotle. I am currently investigating how the method of analysis used in ancient Greek mathematics influenced their philosophical methods for achieving knowledge of the first principles of science.
