James Cantley

RD Lawrence Fellow, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics

College position:

Dr. James Cantley's current research interests revolve around the beta cell: how insulin secretory capacity is matched to demand during health and obesity, and how this fails during type 2 diabetes. Cantley's group investigates the molecular and metabolic mechanisms that underlie normal beta cell function, how insulin secretion is coordinated with whole body metabolic status, and the role of these mechanisms in beta cell adaptation or failure during metabolic disease. The group currently focusses on several key pathways involved in nutrient sensing, lipid signalling and the endocrine regulation of insulin secretion.
