In his book, Paine applies economic criticism to canonical novels, dramatically changing the way we read these classics and proposing a new model for how economics can inform literary analysis. Paine argues that no book can be properly understood without reference to its point of sale: the author's knowledge of the market, of reader expectations, and their own efforts to define and achieve literary value.

Paine started a two year MPhil course in French and Russian at Wolfson in September 2010, which led to a DPhil he finished in 2016. He is now a Supernumerary Fellow at Wolfson College. He is also Senior Advisor and former Managing Director at the investment bank Rothschild & Co.
