The Academic Wing building was formally opened in March this year and has been described in the judges' comments as a “building [that] stuns and delights from the moment you set eyes on it”.

The RIBA awards are highly regarded by both the public and architecture profession as representing architectural excellence, based on peer judgement and building visits. The architects embraced design elements in the College's original buildings by Powell and Moya, resulting in recognition for the Conservation Award. This stipulates that ‘the project should respect and enhance the original building, but also have regard to the wider context', which the new design has successfully achieved by “adding to, enhancing and embracing the Powell and Moya building and, while being reverential, not being shy nor overwhelmed”.

Other RIBA South Regional Award winners in Oxford included the Blavatnik School of Government, the Bodleian Library's new Weston Library building and The Ruskin School of Art in East Oxford.
