Dr. Katherine Cross is a historian of the early medieval period (c.400-c.1100 AD) with a focus on northern Europe. She works with a combination of texts and objects to investigate questions about cultural contact, identity and religion.
Currently Cross is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the British Museum’s Empires of Faith project, which explores the development of religious imagery across the Late Antique world. Her research explores the relationship between religion and war in conversion-period Britain and Francia: when and how were supernatural forces – pagan or Christian – invoked in warfare? Cross is also working on turning my PhD thesis into a book about ethnicity in Viking Age England and Normandy.
