We will meet to learn about and discuss the organisation of labour in South India (the Madras Presidency) during the decades surrounding Independence. Dr Karuna is expert on the formation of India's enormous informal economy and her talk will focus on the problems of, and opposition to, the unionisation of workers in the 'non-factory' economy i.e. in workshops, homes, bazaars etc.which still constitute most of India's 'firms'. All welcome.
