President's Seminar: Assumptions

What assumptions do we make in our research, and where do they come from? Should assumptions always be stated? At first glance 'yes' might seem like the right answer to this last question - but surely we'd go mad if we really stated every assumption. When do assumptions really need stating, and what prompts us to challenge them? There will be three short talks followed by discussion, and all participants will be encouraged to continue discussion over supper in Hall afterwards. All are very welcome.
