President Sir Tim Hitchens will be in conversation with Cara Fellow and Wolfson Alumnus Shaharzad Akbar.

The collapse of Kabul and Taliban's military takeover uprooted Shaharzad and her family like thousands of Afghans & forced a new start, personally & professionally. In the past year in exile, she has been reflecting about the human rights movement of Afghanistan, the way forward in face of the current human rights crisis, the international response and implications beyond Afghanistan. She will share how these reflections will inform her ongoing work & her understanding of the global movement for human rights.

Shaharzad was the Chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission until August 2021 when the Taliban took power. Now based in Wolfson, and building a new international NGO to support human rights in Afghanistan, Shaharzad will talk about the situation in the country and her own story. Oxford’s first female Afghan graduate, her own narrative tells the story of her country.
