Sir David Smith
After being Principal of the University of Edinburgh from 1987 to 1994, Sir David Smith became President of Wolfson from 1994 to 2000. Prior to these appointments, his scientific career was mostly based in Oxford, although he spent 7 years at Bristol University. His research focused on the physiology of symbiotic associations between unicellular algae and other organisms. Initially Smith studied the movement of photosynthetically produced carbohydrate from alga to fungus in lichens. Later, he studied this process in corals and other coelenterate animals which host intracellular algae.
Smith was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1976.
