FAQ
After several questions were posed at the Societies' Fair here are some answers:
- What kit do I need?
- For day walks good shoes or boots are recommended, as it may be muddy. Wellington (rubber) boots are not comfortable to walk in, and trainers will make your feet wet and cold.
- A good rain-coat and (optional) waterproof trousers. It can rain ANY time in Britain!
- Light-weight trousers are recommended. Jeans (denim) chafe when wet, and will not be acceptable on longer walks.
- For weekend trips we have tents, stoves and most of the required equipment, however we are limited, and the kit is not as good as stuff you might like. However, feel free to discuss this with us before buying anything.
- For specialist sports like climbing, canoeing etc, we will hire most of the equipment. Again, discuss with us if you are thinking of buying anything.
- Does
it cost money?
- Currently there is no membership fee for members of Wolfson College
- Each activity will be run "at cost" and we will try to keep prices as reasonable as possible.
- We will arrange a few fund raisers, which will go straight back in to the club.
- Do I have to come to everything?
- No, you can commit to as little or as much as you like, but of course we hope you will enjoy it so much you will be back every trip!
- Is
it all serious, athletic stuff?
- No, we hope to cater for a range of fitness, abilities and interests. Some things will be more challenging, and we will indicate this on the website and email.
- Are
families/children welcome?
- Families and children are certainly welcome on day-trips. Some weekend trips may be split into a family and a more serious group. Inevitably socialising will occur in pubs, so this is left to the parent's discretion.
There will be a system to indicate what kind of trip we are organising. Trips will fill on a first come, first-served basis, where the number will be limited to transport, in most cases. For trips that require hired equipment or external instructors, a deposit will be required in advance.
Children Friendly: Day trips and walks where everyone is welcome.
Beginners Welcome: Trips such as canoeing where instruction can be given and anyone can come along.
More Athletic: Something that requires a reasonable level of fitness. If we attempt to climb a peak, it might be considered hazardous to take someone who is unfit, as getting to the summit and back in (for instance) daylight hours might be essential.
More extreme: Cold or discomfort might be incurred, e.g. sea-kayaking.
Skills Required: Little or no training can be given, so participants are expected to all ready have experience in this activity, e.g. pony trekking.
