Sub-fusc (formal academic dress) should be worn for Matriculation, Examinations and Graduation, as well as for various other formal events.
Sub-fusc for men:
A black/ very dark suit, white shirt with a white bow tie, black shoes and socks.
Sub-fusc for women:
A black/very dark skirt or trousers, white shirt with a black ribbon (worn around the neck like a tie) and black tights/socks and shoes. You can also wear a dark coat if desired. Please note that if you choose to wear a skirt you must wear black tights, bare legs or flesh coloured tights are not permitted.
You may not be allowed to enter the Examination Schools/Sheldonian Theatre if you are not wearing the correct clothing, so it is very important that you adhere strictly to the dress code.
Both men and women also need to wear an Advanced Student's gown and a mortarboard or soft cap (for women only).
Gown Hire
Advanced Student gowns, mortarboards, soft caps, ribbons, bow ties and various graduation gowns are available to hire from the General Office on a first-come first-served basis.
Price List
Advanced Student's gown: £3
Black ribbon/white bow tie: £1 each
Mortar board/soft cap: £1 each
MSc/MSt/MBA/MPhil gown and hood: £7
DPhil gown: £7
