The College provides IT Support in the following manner:
- On-line web/email support system, through which requests can be tracked and allocated to relevant support team members
- IT surgeries providing one-to-one support at specific times as advertised in College
- Appointments outside surgery times, where these are inconvenient
The College's resources for such support are limited, and are primarily focused on ensuring the network, software and equipment provided by the College is well-maintained and functional.
Assistance will be given to members of College and spouses/partners whose University Cards have been registered for IT services. Where possible, these individuals will be helped to resolve difficulties related to their own equipment and software when the equipment is being used on Wolfson College networks.
The IT support team does NOT offer support or provide facilities for services in the following situations:
- Within the premises of another College or Department etc, except at the discretion of Wolfson IT Manager or Computing Officer and at the request of that College or Department's IT Officer. Such requests may be referred to the Bursar for review, and charges may be levied.
- IBM/PCs where equipment or software requires
- MS DOS x.xx
- Windows 3.xx
- Windows 95
- 5.25" floppy disk data reading
- 3.5" double side double density diskettes
- tape drives and cartridges of various specifications
- Apple Macintosh computers where equipment or software requires
- Mac 9.x or earlier operating systems
- 400k single-sided disks
- Linux/Unix operating systems on computers connecting to the Wolfson network
- Novell operating systems on computers connecting to the Wolfson network
- Hardware repairs (members will be required to indemnify the College and IT support team members before any equipment is 'opened up')
- Web page design and development
- CGI scripts on web pages
- Wireless networking technology - wireless routers will only be allowed to be connected in exceptional circumstances and upon full consideration of a case submitted in writing. Connection is required to be limited to a specified MAC address by firewalling of an appropriate standard.
Wolfson web server policy on scripts: Due to the amount of time it take to administer a computer with scripting software (perl, ruby, php, etc), deal with support, and make it available to users, the college policy is not to support or allow such facilities. However the University webspace provided with webmail accounts allows safePerl scripting.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the IT Support team reserves the right to decline inappropriate and resource-heavy requests.
The IT support team will endeavour to provide guidance with regard to the availability of resources and support and the compatibility of College systems in the case of such requests.
The IT support team may be able to provide services and support for certain College projects; approaches for any such project should be made in the first instance to the IT Manager or Computing Officer at it [dot] support [at] wolfson [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk
