University of Oxford - A Collegiate System

A Collegiate system makes graduate study at Oxford a truly unique experience. You have the benefit of belonging to two communities - The University, as a large, internationally renowned institution; and a College, a smaller, intimate and multi-disiplinary academic community.

The Role of the University

The University (and your department) determines the content of your courses, organises lectures and seminars, supervises and examines your thesis, sets and marks your examination and awards your degree.

The Role of the College

The College selects graduate students after they have been admitted by the University. The small number of students at each College (as opposed to the University as a whole) allows for supportive personal attention to be given to the induction, academic development and welfare of students.

The College is your home and provides accommodation, meals, common room, library facilities, sports and social facilities, academic support and pastoral care. College life enables you to establish a new circle of friends quickly, and to participate in a lively intellectual community in which Fellows form an important part.

In the following video clip, Wolfson student Will Allen introduces an Oxford University Virtual Open Day guide to Oxford Colleges.
