My recent project is about foundational structures of compositional meaning. Roughly put, this concerns ways of making computers understand human language. The framework that I work in brings two orthogonal theories of meaning together: according to one meaning it is logical form, and according to the other it is based on the context. The former treats meanings of individual words as vacuous, but like all mathematical logical methods, offers a robust and compositional way of constructing meaning for sentences. The second method treats the logical connectives as noise but offers an extremely intuitive and efficient way of constructing meanings for synonymous words.

The surprising point is that both of these methods are well-known mathematical structures of logic and linear algebra. They have also been used to model compound quantum systems. 

By using advanced categorical and diagrammatic methods developed in the quantum group of the department of Computer Science, me and my colleagues have managed to,  for the first time,  build an algorithm to compute a  meaning for sentences which is both context-based and logical.

Our research has been covered by the New Scientist journal and we are in contact with researchers in Google to generalize and mechanize it. 

I am interested in the neurobiology of learning and memory. Currently my research focuses on investigating how short-term memory influences the formation of long-term associations. I am testing the role of the GluA1 subunit of the AMPA receptor in these processes.

I am a postdoctoral researcher in Astrophysics. My research focusses mainly on cosmic ray acceleration in supernova remnants, and how this ties in with magnetic field amplification.

Cosmic rays are charged particles that travel almost with the speed of light. They get accelerated to these high energies in convergent flows where the magnetic field is strong enough to confine them. Luckily, they seem to be able to self-generate the magnetic fields in such environments. We attempt to understand, using numerical and analytical tools, how this non-linear interaction between cosmic rays and magnetic fields proceeds to accelerate the high-energy particles in the universe and produce the observed signature.

My research is on early modern English literature, especially seventeenth-century poetry, women’s writing and questions of literary influence and poetic form. I am currently completing a monograph, provisionally entitled Forms of Engagement: Women, Poetry and Culture, 1640-1680, focusing on poetry by Lucy Hutchinson, Margaret Cavendish and Katherine Philips.

I have edited (with Johanna Harris) a collection of essays, 'The Intellectual Culture of Puritan Women 1558-1680' (Palgrave, 2010). With Sarah C.E.Ross I am editing an accessible teaching anthology, 'Women Poets of the English Civil War', for Manchester University Press. With Ben Burton, I am working on a major digital humanities project, 'FORM: Forms Online, Renaissance to Modern', and we are holding a conference connected to the project at Wolfson in July 2012 called Renaissance Poetic Form: New Directions. I teach at Wadham College.

I followed the rise and fall of textile and clothing industries in South Asia for over a decade. The focus of my research is on the organisation of industrial ecosystems including labour, and their embeddedness within broader social and political orders.

I have a PhD in development studies from London School of Economics.  After working for the World Bank and the United Nations for over a decade, I am currently a Senior Lecturer in University of Pretoria and am affiliated with its Human Economy project that brings scholars from BRIC to work with African scholars.

I am a co-investigator on a research project led by Professor Jennifer Welsh ‘The Responsibility to Prevent: Developing Ad hoc and Systemic Strategies.’

This research project, based at the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC), seeks to advance the implementation of the principle of R2P in response to mass atrocities, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity, by elaborating on how one of its key elements – prevention –can be operationalized in international society.

The project is one of fourteen projects awarded funding from the Australian Responsibility to Protect Fund.

There are several parallel themes to my research programme. The first investigates evolutionary trends in brain size and architecture. Using a comparative approach, we test explicit adaptive hypotheses for the evolution of brain size and architecture.

The second theme is to develop and use network theory to evaluate social complexity through measurements of stability and structuring in animal populations. We are currently developing this approach by assessing responses across ecological gradients.

The third theme is to understand macroevolutionary trends in social behaviour using Bayesian and comparative approaches. Recent work has reconstructed major evolutionary transitions in sociality in primates and related these patterns to ecology and morphology.

A fourth theme is exploring the physiological basis for behavioural variation both at the individual and species level. Finally, I am supervising projects that evaluate how species’ characteristics affect their sensitivity to environmental change.

The general theme of my research is to use computational techniques to understand the properties of membrane proteins, which are involved in many diseases and are targets for approximately 50% of all pharmaceutical drugs.

I predominantly use molecular simulations to propose how these proteins open and close, engage with small molecules and interact with their lipid membrane environment. I work in the Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Biochemistry (SBCB) Unit which is directed by Professor Mark S. P. Sansom and is based in the Biochemistry Department. My research is funded by the BBSRC.

I’m a postdoctoral researcher in the fields of animal ecology and behaviour, working in Christian Rutz’ research group in the Department of Zoology.

I study the ecology and behaviour of the New Caledonian crow, an island endemic bird species which, unusually among birds, manufactures and uses tools to obtain food in the wild.

How these crows ‘know’ how to produce and use tools is a mystery, and solving it is my principal research objective. A prerequisite for this research is a sound description of the basic ecology of the species, which is currently lacking. I am addressing these knowledge gaps through field studies of wild crow populations in the forests of New Caledonia. Besides my work on tool-using birds, I am also interested in conservation and biogeography, and I have ongoing collaborative research projects in these fields.

As a social anthropologist, I have conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Southeast India. Having completed a PhD at the LSE, I joined the Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme in SIAS when it was launched in 2008. I teach on the MSc in Contemporary India and am currently Director of Graduate Studies for the course.

My research is concerned with the relationship between different forms of inequality with particular reference to Dalits, one of India’s largest and most subordinated social groups. My work looks at the ways in which formal education, identity politics, affirmative action, state policy and labour relations have shaped class, caste and gender relations at the local level. My forthcoming book ‘The Imperatives of Honour: gender, caste and the politics of culture among Dalits in south India’ is especially concerned with the position of Dalit women in light of these changes.

I am the Coordinator of the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. I hold a PhD from the Development Studies Institute at the London School of Economics, an MA in international politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, and a BA from Wesleyan University.

My current research is on media policy in post-war situations and I have studied the communication strategies of guerrilla movements and their approach to media policy after seizing power. I am writing a book on media policy in Ethiopia and have conducted research on media in Somaliland. 

I have carried out long-term fieldwork among Buryats in northeast Mongolia and China since 1999, and among the Nuosu of Yunnan, China since 2007. Over the summer of 2005, I also carried out fieldwork among the Deed Mongols of Qinghai, China. From 2003, I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate anthropology students on a wide range of topics.

My research interests span the anthropology of religion; shamanic practices; recurrent magical innovations; the anthropology of Chinese ethnology; dreams; concepts of fortune, luck and fate; heuristics of time and space; divination; conflict and witchcraft; and games. Lifelong training and ongoing interest in the performing arts, and in ballet dance especially, has informed my work.
